Venezuela Warns Colombia Against Inciting a Conflict

Venezuela’s defense minister on Friday warned Colombia against provoking a conflict after President Hugo Chávez severed ties with the nation and placed his military on alert.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported on 2 July 2010 at:

http://www.welovecostarica.com/public/46_US_Warships_Plus_7000_US_Marines_On_Route_To_Costa_Rica.cfm

"On the 2nd July 2010 the Costa Rica Congress authorized the entry of 46 U.S. warships capable of carrying 200 helicopters and warplanes, plus 7,000 U.S. Marines "who may circulate the country in uniform without any restrictions" , plus submarine killer ships to the Costa Rican coast for "anti-narcotics operations and humanitarian missions' between 1st July 2010 until 31st December 2010."

Although the "good reason" for this deployment was, allegedly drug interdiction, the "real reason" may be far more ominous.

Venezuela's Chavez has been a thorn in the side of the US government for a long time.

Also, as reported on 13 July 2010 at:

Venezuela revels in oil reserves, challenges remain

"Venezuela hopes to catapult past Saudi Arabia as the world leader in certified crude oil reserves when it finishes registering oil deposits in its vast Orinoco Belt this year.

An increase of 22.5 percent in the Latin American country's reserves was behind OPEC's announcement last week that the group's proven reserves rose in 2009 to 1.06 trillion barrels."

The massive oil wealth that was to have been the "payoff" for the American invasion and occupation of Iraq never materialized.

Nearly nine years on, that US geopolitical "vision" of the installation of pipelines with which to control Eurasian oil, appears to be no closer to reality than it was the day before the US and NATO invaded Afghanistan.

At this point, Venezuela oil is nationalized, a situation the US would love to see reversed.

I have a very difficult time in believing that the timing of this July deployment of US military to Costa Rica, coupled with the escalating tensions between Columbia (the US's "good buddy" in the region) and Venezuela, can possibly be viewed as accidental.

Militarization of Central America and the Caribbean: The U.S. Military Moves Into Costa Rica

While it is doubtful that the U.S. wants to directly engage in a military conflict with, most likely, Venezuela right now, preparations for this possibility are being made. Chavez Warns of US Military Escalation

"There are highly alarming elements: the military exercises that the South Koreans and gringos performed in the Yellow Sea; the pressure on Iran for daring to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; the mobilization of U.S. and Israeli troops near Iran's coasts, and the violence in Iraq and Afghanistan occupied by the empire," Chavez said during his usual Sunday news commentary, "Las lineas de Chavez."

Chavez denounced the continuing and false accusations by Obama government agencies regarding alleged links between Caracas and international drug trafficking, and the surprising presence on unconvincing explanations for thousands of U.S. marines in Costa Rica and the overflights of Dutch aircraft in Venezuelan territory.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I hate to say it, but Chavez has got this right.

And of course, the Obama administration would accuse the Venezuelan government of involvement with drug trafficking, while conveniently ignoring the Medellin cartel next door in Columbia, the US's "good geopolitical friend" in the region.

Traditional Values: Obama Backs Oligarchic 'Continuity' Down South

In [the country] right now there is a military-business regime, with a little bit of democratic makeup."

This sounds like an excellent -- indeed, near-perfect -- description of the true state of the United States in these degraded days of ours. While the sinister comic opera of factional in-fighting amongst the elite provides an increasingly thin and cracked patina of democracy, the militarist-corporatist machines continue their ravenous devouring of the fat of the land and the flesh of the weak.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A succession of administrations has continually supported various thugocracies in South American and beyond, and they do this to insure the continued prosperity of American commercial interests.

Obama, whose real constituency is the very wealthy and large corporations, could hardly be expected to rock the boat here, no matter how many people get slaughtered by death squads simply for peacefully advocating for economic and social change.

Leader of Death Squads Wins Colombian Election

Juan Manuel Santos, notorious Defense Minister in the regime of outgoing President Alvaro Uribe and closely identified with high crimes against humanity “won” the recent Presidential elections in Colombia, June 2010.

According to the FT, “Colombia not Venezuela is (the) best model for Latin America” (FT 6/23/2010 p. 8). Citing Santos “overwhelming” margin – he garnered 69% of the vote, the FT claimed he won a “strong mandate” (FT 6/22/2010). In what has to be one of the most flagrant cover-ups in recent history, the media accounts exclude the most egregious facts about the elections and the profoundly authoritarian policies pursued by Santos over the past decade.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US has had a long track record of siding with and supporting the most extreme "thugocracies" in foreign countries because it is believed that they will insure "stability" for US business interests, at the complete expense of the betterment of the lives of their own people.

The US government can rest easy and relax here, now that it's very own thug is in charge of Columbia.

Private Contractors and Covert Wars in Latin America

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) threatened to issue subpoenas against the U.S. Defense and State Departments last month if they continue to refuse to accurately account for billions of dollars spent on private contractors assisting Washington in the 'war on drugs' in Latin America. But McCaskill's concerns raise broader questions about oversight and transparency of a controversial industry and its ever expanding role in Washington's foreign policy.

It is about making money for those with close US ties (anyone remember "Iran-Contra"?!?), and shutting down the competition.

In December 2003, we all saw the photos of a disheveled Saddam Hussein after he was pulled out of a “spider hole” in a town near Tikrit. The administration laughed and the U.S. public made jokes about him and his hiding place.

The room was dirty. There was an empty can of Spam. The story was that he was holed up there and was totally irrelevant to Iraq. His day was done and he was now in the hands of Iraq’s liberators. What you saw wasn’t real. Nothing of this scenario was true.

A chief lesson to learn from President Barack Obama’s recent unwillingness to stand up to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud Lobby is that such timidity can get people killed.

Another boomerang stuns the Venezuelan bourgeoisie

Previously, Venezuelan brokers could trade in government bonds purchased at 2.15 to the US dollar and then offload them into the parallel exchange market at a rate 3 times greater. So, just for moving a few pieces of paper or keying in numbers on to a computer screen, so-called investors could free up their bolívares and make an easy 300% profit almost overnight.

In fact the correct word for such investors would be “speculators” or even “parasites”. Their actions have caused the bolívar to weaken significantly against the US dollar sparking an inflationary spiral which affects all 29 million inhabitants of the Bolivarian Republic.

Colombia: State Terror in the Name of Peace

The first casualty of state terror is the corruption of language, the invention of euphemisms, where words mean their opposite and slogans cover great crimes: There is no longer a world consensus that condemns crimes against humanity. This is because mass murder and assassinations secure investor ‘confidence’, because Indians are dispossessed so the mines can be exploited; oil workers disappear so the petroleum will flow; and the international financial press praises the success of el Presidente for “pacifying the country”.

When narco-presidents are embraced by the leaders of North America and Europe, it is evident that criminals have become respectable the respectable have become criminals.

Putin bolsters oil, defense ties with Venezuela

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited Venezuela on Friday to discuss oil, defense and nuclear energy cooperation with Latin America’s main leftist foe of the United States, President Hugo Chavez.

They were to launch a $20 billion venture between Russian firms and Venezuelan state company PDVSA to pump 450,000 barrels a day — almost a fifth of the OPEC member’s current output — from the vast Orinoco heavy oil belt.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A note to the US State Department: Russia and China have been making deals to insure energy stability for their respective countries.

What has the US been doing in that regard? Waging wars, those writ large on the radar screen, like Iraq and Afghanistan, plus the proxy wars in places like Somalia we don't hear all that much about. And don't forget; when it comes to energy, Africa is the new Middle East in terms of untapped resources.

As reported in:

http://original.antiwar.com/volman/2010/04/02/military-involvement-in-africa/

"In its FY 2011 budget request for security assistance programs for Africa, the Obama administration is asking for $38 million for the Foreign Military Financing program to pay for U.S. arms sales to African countries."

Forgive me, but the model of making deals rather than waging wars to secure energy resources makes infinitely more sense to me.

But again, that would be logical.

U.S. and Colombia Cover Up Atrocities Through Mass Graves

This scandal revolves around the Colombian military, most recently under the direction of Juan Manuel Santos, knowingly murdering civilians in cold blood and then dressing them up to look like armed guerillas in order to justify more aid from the United States. According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pilay, this practice has been so "systematic and widespread" as to amount to a "crime against humanity." Militarizing Latin America

There has been a sharp increase in US military aid and training of Latin American officers, focusing on light infantry tactics to combat "radical populism" -- a concept that sends shivers up the spine in the Latin American context Military training is being shifted from the State Department to the Pentagon, eliminating human rights and democracy conditionalities under congressional supervision, which has always been weak, but was at least a deterrent to some of the worst abuses. The US Fourth Fleet, disbanded in 1950, was reactivated in 2008, shortly after Colombia's invasion of Ecuador, with responsibility for the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the surrounding waters.

This is Americanism, the only predatory ideology to deny that it is an ideology. The rise of tentacular corporations that are dictatorships in their own right and of a military that is now a state with the state, set behind the façade of the best democracy 35,000 Washington lobbyists can buy, and a popular culture programmed to divert and stultify, is without precedent. More nuanced perhaps, but the results are both unambiguous and familiar. Denis Halliday and Hans von Sponeck, the senior United Nations officials in Iraq during the American and British-led blockade, are in no doubt they witnessed genocide. They saw no gas chambers. Insidious, undeclared, even presented wittily as enlightenment on the march, the Third World War and its genocide proceeded, human being by human being.

Ezili Dantò: Well perhaps because Haiti right now is under occupation and the people, their voice is not being heard.

This is a very good time for foreign companies to be granted concessions, because the folks in office are not representing the people of Haiti.

Obama authorizes covert economic war against Venezuela

WMR’s intelligence sources have reported that the Obama administration has authorized an economic war against Venezuela in order to destabilize the government of President Hugo Chavez.

After a successful coup against Chavez ally, President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras, and the very thin 51-49 percent electoral win by Chile’s billionaire right-winger Sebastian Pinera on January 17, a buoyed Obama White House has given a green light for political operatives in Venezuela, many of whom operate under the cover of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to set the stage for massive street demonstrations to protest Chavez’s devaluation of the bolivar, Venezuela’s currency.

US Threatens Venezuela. Netherlands has Granted US Military Use of its Islands in the Caribbean

The government of the Netherlands recently granted the US military use of its islands in the Caribbean, with the excuse that this is to help in the “war against drugs”. In reality, this is a direct threat to the Chavez government in Venezuela.

In the Dutch media articles have appeared about the “war-mongering” president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, who is “preparing a war against Colombia”. Now Chávez has accused the Netherlands of supporting aggression against Venezuela, because the Netherlands has given permission to the American armed forces to use the military bases on the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curaçao[1].

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported in:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/cabs/Venezuela/Background.html

"Venezuela is one of the world’s largest exporters of crude oil and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. In 2007, the country was the seventh-largest net oil exporter in the world."

Currently, Russia and China have been making deals to get the energy their respective countries need.

The US has been waging wars to achieve the same objective.

It does appear that the US, which doesn't particularly like Hugo Chavez one bit, and is hungry for Venezuela's oil, is looking for any way possible to destabilize the Chavez regime and install some leader they consider to be more "pro-American."

Mondo Hondo: Obama Goes Traditional in Latin America

For almost 200 years, since the proclamation of the Monroe Doctrine, the United States has continally asserted – and often physically exerted – its self-awarded right of dominion over all the lands south of its border. Venezuela Warns US Against Incursions From Aruba, Curacao

Venezuela on Thursday warned the US military against violating its airspace from bases in Aruba and Curacao, repeating recent accusations that Washington is preparing an act of “aggression”.

"We are playing down these comments; a lot because we're talking about a message intended for the US public that defers from the comments that we hear internationally" Bolivian Vice-Chancellor Hugo Fernandez told reporters on Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Chavez prepares Venezuela for 'US-provoked war'

President Hugo Chavez says Venezuela must be ready to defend itself against what he called the US and Colombia's gearing up for initiating a military conflict.

Chavez who accused Washington and Bogota of planning to stage war against his country announced that thousands of Russian missiles and rocket launchers were being received by Venezuela as the country is preparing for a possible military conflict.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Chavez is many things, but he's not an idiot.

The positioning of American forces in Columbia does not bode well for peace in the region.

And of course, as reported here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_reserves_in_Venezuela

"There were 80 billion barrels (13×10^9 m3) of conventional oil reserves in Venezuela as of 2007, the largest oil reserves of any country in South America."

Let's see if I have the formula correctly. Foreign oil reserves, plus a government the US doesn't particularly like, equals... vigorous US attempts at destabilization of that government, including military confrontation, if the US thinks it can get away with it.

Any questions?!?!?

Washington Alters U.S. Air Force Document to Hide Intentions Behind Military Accord with Colombia

Despite the modifications to the U.S. Air Force document more than six months after the original was sent to Congress, the intentions behind the U.S. military agreement with Colombia remain the same. No evidence exists demonstrating a change in the Pentagon’s global mobility strategy - it is an official state policy included in the Global Defense Posture Strategy, in place at the present time. The military base in Palanquero, Colombia has been identified several times in different Pentagon documents as the perfect site – a unique opportunity – to guarantee continental access in South America, facilitating “full spectrum military operations” in Latin America.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Remember: the US imports about half of its oil from South America, which is why this treaty was so important to the US.

Chavez Slams Colombian Border Provocations

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez denounced on Sunday provocations by the Colombian government on the common border with the support of the local opposition media.

Venezuela and Colombia are at odds over Bogota's decision to grant the US access to seven of its military bases.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder when the war of words here will escalate into a war of bullets and bombs.

That seems to be what the US wants to see happen here, as a way of taking Venezuela's Chavez out.

COLOMBIA warned overnight that its forces were on "maximum alert'' and were prepared to defend against any attack, amid rising tensions with neighbouring Venezuela.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This situation could move from a war of words to a war of bullets in a heartbeat.

And considering what the anti-Chavez attitude in Washington, (coupled with the latest agreement between Columbia and this US regarding the presence of US troops in Columbia), perhaps this may well be a deliberate set-up to get the hostilities started.

Venezuela blows up border bridges with Colombia

Venezuela has blown up two pedestrian bridges on its border with Colombia in the latest sign of deteriorating relations between the Andean neighbours.

Soldiers destroyed the walkways because they were being used by illegal militia and drug traffickers, said Eusebio Aguero, an army general based in the border state of Táchira.

"Uniformed men, apparently from the Venezuelan army, arrived in trucks on the Venezuelan side at two pedestrian bridges that link communities on both sides and then proceeded to dynamite them," Silva said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Venezuela's military might also have considered the bridges an excellent crossing point from which US commandos could have entered Venezuela to attempt some kind of destabilization activities against the Chavez government.

And given the rather sordid history of US intervention in South America, they could well have been correct.

War threat between Venezuela and Colombia increases

Tensions between the countries reached a new high after the Colombian military arrested four Venezuelan soldiers, just days after Mr Chavez told his army to "prepare for war" with Colombia.

The Venezuelan ambassador to Bogota, Gustavo Marquez, said that the seriousness of the situation could not be overstated and that "there is a pre-war situation in the entire region".

Webmaster's Commentary:

This could go from a war of words to a war of bullets in a heartbeat.

And don't forget; one of the major factors in this is the treaty the US has signed with Columbia this last October, allowing for a significant number of American troops to be deployed on Columbian military bases.

Nov 10 08:46

Tensions grow as Chavez masses troops on border

Telling his people, "If you want peace, prepare for war," and accusing the US of secretly plotting to invade and seize Venezuela's oil reserves, Hugo Chavez announced that he intends to send 15,000 troops to his country's border with Colombia.

The hostile move, which has inflamed diplomatic relations across the region, saw the left-wing president urge his soldiers to "defend this sacred nation called Venezuela" against what he called a creeping right-wing "empire". In response, Colombia said it would complain to the United Nations.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Given the history of US intervention in the region, coupled with the recently signed agreement allowing a fairly substantial presence of US troops in Columbia, it is imminently possible that Chavez has every rational reason to be nervous.

Venezuela sends 15,000 troops to Colombia border

President Hugo Chavez's government is sending 15,000 soldiers to the border with Colombia, saying the military buildup is needed to increase security, combat drug trafficking and root out paramilitary groups.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Chavez is not so much sending a message to Columbia as it is sending a message to the US, which has recently signed a "military base pact" with Columbia.

As reported here on 30 October, 2009:

http://www.theworldlink.com/articles/2009/10/30/news/doc4aeb396fdccb3889469995.txt

"In a private, low-key ceremony, the U.S. ambassador and three Colombian ministers today signed a pact to expand Washington’s military’s presence, a deal that Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez has called a threat to the region’s security."

"No details of the pact were immediately provided. However, officials have said it would increase U.S. access to seven Colombian bases for 10 years."

"
Under the pact, U.S. military personnel will continue to enjoy diplomatic immunity from prosecution. Some Colombians had objected to exempting U.S. military personnel from local criminal jurisdiction."

Under the 10-year deal, the US military will not only have access to military bases, but also be able to use major international civilian airports.

US personnel and defence contractors will also enjoy diplomatic immunity.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This gives the US military the golden opportunity to wreak more havoc on neighboring countries in South America, and does little or nothing to enhance the welfare of Colombian citizens.

One clue is that nobody else seems to hijack aircraft. That’s just plain suicide, and I don’t care what you’ve heard about “hajis”, most people just don’t do stupid shit like this.

Chavez tells Israelis to disobey ‘genocidal’ govt

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday told the Israeli people not to support their government, which he described as “genocidal”.

Chavez is on an 11-day trip to Libya, Algeria, Syria, Iran, Belarus, Russia and Spain in what he is describing as a bid to build a multi-polar world and decrease US influence in the region.

The Venezuelan president has singled out Israel for criticism during his visit to Syria, slamming it for mistreating the Palestinians and being an agent of US imperialism.

US's 'arc of instability' just gets bigger

The New Great Game is not only focused on the face-off between the United States and strategic competitors Russia and China - with Pipelineistan as a defining element.

The full spectrum dominance doctrine requires the control of the Pentagon-coined "arc of instability" from the Horn of Africa to western China. The cover story is the former "global war on terror", now "overseas contingency operations" under the management of President Barack Obama's administration.

VIDEO: US to attack Venezuela

A military agreement between the United States and Columbia has led to widespread concern in South America. Leaders want to know why the United States is trying to increase its military presence in the region. The Colombian government says that having more US troops in the country will help fight drug trafficking and combat terrorism. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, however, ardently opposes these plans. He says that the military bases in Columbia will provoke conflict in Latin America. Venezuelan-American Attorney and Author Eva Golinger joins RT's Dina Gusovsky from Caracas via skype to discuss this matter.

Ignoring Outrage, Obama Set to Expand Pentagon Presence in Colombia

Imagine that you live in a nice house in a tense neighborhood. Your neighbors haven’t been too pleased with you lately, and you have a terrible roach infestation running havoc in your house. But perhaps there’s hope.

A big, strong guy lives down the street, and is offering to help out. He has big guns and says he has just the spray to get rid of those pesky roaches if you just let him crash at your place.

Washington Times' Hypocritical Obama-Nazi Slur

WTimes' Hypocritical Obama-Nazi Slur
By Robert Parry
August 17, 2009
One of the ugly ironies in the Right’s depiction of President Barack Obama as Hitler and health reform as a plan for Nazi-style euthanasia is that the owner of the Washington Times, which has pushed this line of attack, has had longstanding ties with World War II-era Nazis, neo-Nazis and rightist “death squads.”
Indeed, the Washington Times founder and funder, Sun Myung Moon, built his international religious-business-media empire in collaboration with Japanese fascist war criminals and with operational assistance from ex-Nazi SS officer Klaus Barbie, the so-called “Butcher of Lyon.”

Obama tacitly backs military's takeover of Honduran democracy

President Obama is making a big mistake in coddling the dictatorship in Honduras, and putting his administration at odds with the rest of the hemisphere. It also looks terrible to the world that his government so easily abandons its professed commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras was overthrown by the military on June 28. Most of Latin America saw this as a threat to democracy in the hemisphere, immediately condemned the coup, and strongly supported Zelaya's return. The Organization of American States as well as the General Assembly of the United Nations called for Zelaya's "immediate and unconditional" return.

Prepare for war: Chavez

'We do not want war, we hate it. But we must prepare for it. We are number one on the list, Venezuela. We are the first target of the (United States). Using Colombia and the bases in Aruba and Curacao, they are surrounding us,' Mr Chavez warned.

Deal: United States soldiers will deploy to Colombia

Some American troops will soon find themselves stationed at military bases scattered across the South American nation of Colombia with a mission to use advanced Predator drone technology to aid in fighting the drug trade and to combat terrorism, according to published reports Saturday.

But Colombia’s neighbors certainly do not see it that way.

The deal is worth over 40 million dollars for Bogota, along with expanded US military assistance for Bogota’s counternarcotics efforts, according to a US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder what the real motivation behind this deal would be.

Perhaps it's to keep an eye on the deals Russia is making in the region, on both energy issues and arms. Columbia shares borders with Venezeula, Brazil, and Peru.

As reported in

"The increase in Russian deliveries to South America in recent years has largely been the result of one country's purchases: Venezuela. Until 2005, Venezuela's main suppliers of military equipment were the United States and Western Europe, which together accounted for 79 per cent of Caracas' imports for 1990-2005. Following the break-off in relations between Venezuela and the United States, and the imposition of an arms embargo by Washington, Caracas signed arms deals worth over $4.4 billion with Russia for 10 Mi-35 combat helicopters, 3 Mi-26 heavy transport helicopters, 40 Mi-17 multi-role helicopters, 100 000 AK-103 rifles, and 24 Su-30MK combat aircraft. The resulting deliveries account for 98 per cent of Russian transfers to Venezuela over the last five years. With 7 per cent of Russian arms exports, Venezuela was the fourth largest recipient of Russian exports, behind China (42 per cent), India (20 per cent) and Algeria (8 per cent)"

Mr. President: Don't Make Colombia Another Afghanistan

The Obama administration should reconsider its decision to escalate U.S. involvement in Colombia's long-running civil war.

The White House already has its hands full with Iraq and Afghanistan; it does not need to be drawn deeper into another bloody conflict.

In recent months, negotiations have been quietly under way to turn at least three – and possibly five – Colombian bases into U.S. military outposts. The Pentagon would be allowed to station as many as 800 U.S. military personnel and 600 private contractors at the bases.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Given the muscularity of Obama's foreign policy, coupled with a military stressed to the breaking point with current global commitments, one has to wonder when the draft will be re-instituted.

There may, ultimately, not be enough contracted mercenaries available to fill the gap between existing resources, and the need for a far larger US military.

Honduras: Military Coup Engineered By Two US Companies?

I recently visited Central America. Everyone I talked with there was convinced that the military coup that had overthrown the democratically-elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, had been engineered by two US companies, with CIA support. And that the US and its new president were not standing up for democracy.

Earlier in the year Chiquita Brands International Inc. (formerly United Fruit) and Dole Food Co had severely criticized Zelaya for advocating an increase of 60% in Honduras’s minimum wage, claiming that the policy would cut into corporate profits. They were joined by a coalition of textile manufacturers and exporters, companies that rely on cheap labor to work in their sweatshops.

How America might invent the future

Modern humans may impatiently look forward to their robot servants and flying cars of the future, but true lessons about innovation come from the past. And history suggests that making a great leaps forward in science and technology requires much more than lone genius. Cooperation, financing and hard work are at the core of progress.
