The SEC Makes Wall Street More Fraudulent

The mainstream reaction to the Bernard Madoff scandal was inevitable. Whenever a government regulatory agency proves itself to be incredibly incompetent or corrupt, the respectable media swoop in to declare that the "free market" has failed and the agency in question obviously needs more money and power.

New Short Film - Help Defeat The Hate Bill

The federal hate crimes bill has been narrowly defeated five times since 1998. Today, it enjoys its highest chance ever of passage, strongly supported by President-elect Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress. It could be reintroduced into Congress this week.

If the hate bill's powerful supporters succeed, America will begin to establish a dual-justice system, as Canada did in 1971. Traditional law will still cover general crime, but a parallel "bias-motivation" system (and supporting federal bureaucracy) will be erected. Crimes of "prejudice" will be vehemently prosecuted. Inevitably, such crime will include "verbal violence" (i.e. criticism) against federally protected groups, such as Jews and homosexuals. Those who commit "speech crimes" will face harsh fines and even imprisonment, as now threaten the politically incorrect in Canada, Australia, and many European countries.

What can lovers of freedom do to hold back the iron curtain of hate laws?

Congress: New year, new pay hike

UNEMPLOYMENT is at its highest level in 15 years. Housing prices won't stop falling. The stock market has suffered its most punishing collapse since 1931, and shareholders have lost $7 trillion in wealth. Millions of workers have lost their jobs; millions more are worried about losing theirs. IRAs and 401k accounts have been decimated, and companies are halting their contributions to retirement plans. Retail sales are dragging, the credit markets have seized up, and worse is expected in 2009. The government has gone to unprecedented lengths to improve the economy, yet the economy keeps getting worse. The federal budget deficit is headed for a trillion dollars, and the national debt is well over $10 trillion and climbing. The number of Americans saying the country is on the wrong track is at or near its all-time high; consumer confidence is at its all-time low.

So what do you do now?

Well, if you're a member of Congress, you give yourself a raise.

Has the Time Come to Abolish the State?

In the end, Sartwell argues, state power does not reside within the consent given it by the people but, rather, on coercion, primarily, the threat and use of deadly force. Sartwell argues that the state use of coercion does not follow from legitimacy. Rather, state use of coercion is without legitimacy and demonstrates the illegitimacy of the state. It is on this point, specifically, that I fully concur. I believe that only human beings have rights. States, like corporations, are mere legal abstractions. What right has a legal abstraction to require of any one of us anything whatsoever? What if 200 million people told the state to fuck off?

Desperately Seeking Obama ( missing pair of testes}

Surely the lesson cannot be lost on President-elect Barack Obama. That such violence can be waged on so defenseless a population with the support of the Bush Administration is unconscionable. That Obama chooses to remain silent is nothing short of cowardice.

=========

Obama's silence on the Gaza crisis grows more curious by the day; it has already cost him much political capital. He appears weak and ineffectual even before his inauguration, one more symbol of hope capitulating to the realpolitik of the ‘special' U.S./Israeli relationship.

=========
Unfortunately, Obama is missing in action in this first challenge to his Presidency. The Israelis have used his own words to justify their aggression, and Obama has responded with a deafening silence. This does not bode well for the future.

Rangel Sought $10 Million Contribution From AIG and Then Approved Subpart F Exception Benefiting AIG

Embattled House Ways & Means Chair Charles Rangel sought a $10 million donation from AIG for a school of public service that City College of New York was building in his honor and later changed his position and approved the subpart F active financing exception (worth millions annually to AIG) that was later enacted as part of the $700 billion bailout bill.

Two New Year Hopes

My first hope is for honesty in politics.

I've always wondered how Lyndon Johnson became a millionaire while earning for a lifetime a modest federal salary.

How did Nick Mavroules, who became a Congressman in 1978, avoid detection for so long? He pleaded guilty in 1993 to bribery and racketeering charges.

How come Rep. Charlie Rangel (NY) owns so much property in New York and an expensive villa in the Dominican Republic? -- all of this on a representative's salary.

And isn't that Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich (From Transylvania??), something else? It appears he's tried to, among other things, sell Obama's vacant senate seat for $250 thousand. Do you believe for a minute this is the first time this guy has reached for a shady buck?

Jan 03 06:29

Bush's Final F.U.

With president-elect Barack Obama already taking command of the financial crisis, it's tempting to think that regime change in America is a done deal. But if George Bush has his way, the country will be ruled by his slash-and-burn ideology for a long time to come.

In its final days, the administration is rushing to implement a sweeping array of "midnight regulations" - de facto laws issued by the executive branch - designed to lock in Bush's legacy. Under the last- minute rules, which can be extremely difficult to overturn, loaded firearms would be allowed in national parks, uranium mining would be permitted near the Grand Canyon and many injured consumers would no longer be able to sue negligent manufacturers in state courts. Other rules would gut the Endangered Species Act, open millions of acres of wild lands to mining, restrict access to birth control and put local cops to work spying for the federal government.

Did Bush Sr. Kill Kennedy?

Russ Baker's new book presents an account of the U.S. government that is both remarkably new and extensively documented. According to this account, George H. W. Bush, the father of the current president, devoted his career to secret intelligence work with the CIA many years before he became the CIA director, and the network of spies and petroleum plutocrats he began working with early on has played a powerful but hidden role in determining the direction of the U.S. government up to the current day.

The Post-bush recovery period

There are major questions outstanding regarding Bush & the administrations culpability, substance, competence etc.. Just how did George W. Bush morph into an insecure, sadistic juvenile incapable of moral reasoning? Could it be that the pressures of the presidency overwhelmed his limited capacities? That he was manipulated by men far shrewder than himself?
“W” has left the USA needing a major image make-over and to promptly redress the administrations failures. There are no good/clear answers to our problems, however the US needs to win back confidence by bucking up and displaying leadership.

First stop the money-corruption cycle, do away with political-influence money and lobbyists by funding our election campaigns exclusively from the US tax dollar with equal amounts of money to support the top five parties/candidates. Vote with your ballot for if you vote with the dollar big money is winning now and will win every time.

A small group of placard-waving pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered near U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's vacation retreat in Hawaii on Tuesday to protest against the Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

Obama has made no public comment on the strikes, which Israel launched on Saturday. Aides have repeatedly said he is monitoring the situation and continues to receive intelligence briefings but that there is only one U.S. president at a time.

Some critics, however, say Obama did choose to speak out after the attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai in November in which gunmen killed nearly 180 people, condemning them as acts of terrorism.

Blagojevich: Crazy or Crazy Like a Fox?

"If either someone in Springfield or in D.C. tries to stop Burris from being appointed, it will be challenged and likely heard by the Supreme Court. Legally, it appears the Supreme Court would have to side with Blagojevich. Blagojevich is Constitutionally mandated to choose the next Senator. That's what he's done. There is no evidence that the choice of Burris was untoward and so, there appears to be no legal reason to block Burris. Such a showdown would play right into the Governor's hands and hand him much needed political capital. He's already endeared himself to some elements within the Illinois African American community just by picking Burris."

...and it would deal a set-back for Rahm Emanuel in his bid to get another Jew in the United States Senate:

Take Nancy Pelosi off the table as Speaker of the House

Democrats, it’s time to clean the House. Start at the top.

When the 111th Congress convenes in January, it is time for a change -- a change of the Speaker of the House. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca) in her two years as speaker has enabled a pro-Bush, pro-corporate agenda almost as facilely and frequently as Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

In November 2006, voters put Democrats in the majority in Congress to end the Iraq occupation and hold Bush responsible for the war. But the among first things she did when she became speaker was take impeachment off the table, giving Bush a blank check to wage the Iraq war for two more years.

Showing disdain for those opposed the war, Pelosi snubbed peace demonstrators outside her San Francisco home, morphing into Bush who refused to meet Cindy Sheehan and peace protesters outside his Crawford, Texas, compound.

Two possibilities:

(1.) The optimistic one is that Barack Obama will be honor his campaign rhetoric and be a champion of the people who elected him. However, to do this, he will have to stay very independent from his DLC right wing and recycled Clinton corporate appointments to date.

(2.) The sadly more realistic scenario is that his appointments to date are an appetizer of the meal to come. In short, we have been snookered again and we're back to the square one of a puppet government of astronomically rich elites.

Officials are casting doubt on an early projection that up to 5 million people could jam downtown Washington on Inauguration Day, saying it is more likely that the crowd will be less than half that size.
