Fury in France as Sarkozy bans adverts from state TV

One of Nicolas Sarkozy's most visible, and most controversial, attempts to transform the French way of life will take effect from 8pm tonight. Advertising will vanish from prime-time on all state-owned television channels as part of an attempt by the President to create, in his own words, a public television service to "rival the quality of the BBC".

Defiance: Beyond Holo-kitsch

Should there be a moratorium on Holocaust movies? Stuart Klawans, the film critic of The Nation, says so in the Jewish magazine Nextbook (but not, oddly, in The Nation), and Ella Taylor tentatively endorses the suggestion this week in The Village Voice. Since these are two of the movies' most thoughtful commentators, who happen to be Jewish, the proposal deserves consideration.

'Colbert,' 'SpongeBob' may go dark on Time Warner

Viacom has asked for fee increases of between 22 percent and 36 percent per channel, an amount that could increase customers' cable bills, Dudley said. Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said the requested increase was in the very low double-digit percentage range.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Drop CNN and FOX. They are a waste of money and bandwidth anyway!

When you call into the cable systems (800-762-3786 for Time Warner customers) tell them you want to drop CNN and FOX instead of Comedy Central. Hollywood's nicer Nazi

This World War II thriller isn't meant to amuse, of course. But what can the viewer do? Confronted by the piratical-looking Cruise, waxing faux-Teutonic, one is simply overcome by involuntary hysteria.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This "critic" trashes Valkyrie.

Now, I wasn't planning to see this film myself, as I am sick to death of Hitler and Nazis being shoved at me regular as clockwork by Hollywood, but in reading this "critique" it is obvious that the issue here is not the film and its merits, but rather a knee-jerk reaction to portraying any Nazi as a normal decent human being struggling with a bad government, something that modern-day Americans can certainly relate to. It is the same reaction we saw to the recent exhibition of photographs showing the Germans under Hitler enjoying Christmas. How DARE anyone show the Nazis as anything other than the monsters they have been declared to be. The world can never be allowed to see the Nazis as human beings, crammed into uniforms by an evil leader and sent off on a war of conquest with lies and deceptions. The world can never be allowed to seer that many Germans, including officers, did not agree with and support Hitler.

Hollywood provides a never-ending stream of films about Nazis as monsters. But every time there is a film to show that the German people were not totally supportive of Hitler, it gets panned. Some never get made. Some years back there was a film project about the Order of the White Rose, the group of heroic university students who, in the pre-internet days, printed pamphlets about what Hitler was really up to and threw them from rooftops in the cities to spread the word, until they were caught and executed by Hitler. That film was immediately dropped because of course we can never show the Nazi Germany as other than a nation of total monsters. Certainly we can never show the Germans as nearly identical to Americans in that they both struggle against wars of conquest sold with lies.

After all, if the German people of the 1930s and 1940s are just plain folk, and who did not like Hitler, then the legal case to make the Germans of today pay millions to the Israelis of today begins to unravel. And if we do not have the specter of perfect monsters haunting 20th century Germany, then the monsters living in 21st century Israel lose their political cover!

Don’t take health tips from celebs if you know what’s good for you

From Madonna’s quest to “neutralise radiation” to Tom Cruise’s dismissals of psychiatry, celebrities are seldom shy about expressing their views on health and science – even when they appear not to know what they are talking about.

A roll call of public figures such as Cruise and Delia Smith have offered bogus advice or “quackery” this year, according to scientists and doctors. The charity Sense About Science is concerned that celebrities mislead the public when they endorse theories, diets or health products while misrepresenting the science involved.

Voting now will be delayed until after a January 12-13 emergency meeting of SAG's board, said labor officials, who the union's national board must meet first in order to present a united front before sending out strike ballots.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Those of us working in the entertainment industry took it in the financial teeth when the writers struck over internet residuals. Most of us still have not recovered fully and are deeper in debt than we would have been had work continued normally. Now we are looking at a potential SAG strike. And again, the issue is internet residuals, and to judge by the results of the writer's strike the resulting gain in income to the stars will be tiny compared to the losses suffered by all the ancillary people made idle during the strike.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

In "The Day the Earth Stood Still," a remake of the 1951 science-fiction classic, an alien named Klaatu (played by Keanu Reeves, right) visits Earth to save us humans from ourselves. The story is a work of science fiction, with the emphasis on fiction, says Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute and a technical adviser on the film. For example, to be able to detect a dangerous buildup of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere and come save us from global warming, an alien that could travel at light speed would have to reside no more than about 50 light-years away.

What brought Reagan, who served as President of SAG, (1947-52), and again in 1959, to do such a terrible thing? I think he was mostly a hollow type of man, vain, insecure and highly self- righteous.
