Israeli Gaza 'massacre' must stop, Syria's Assad tells US senator

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called on Tuesday for Israel's "massacres" in the Gaza Strip to stop, as he met visiting US Senator Arlen Specter, the official SANA news agency reported.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Oh great; Mr. "Magic Bullet" is in the middle of all this mess.

IAEA Overrides US Concerns, Approves Syria Aid

US complaints earlier this week about the “wholly inappropriate” IAEA aid scheduled to be provided to Syria have been rejected, and the agency has approved the $350,000 aid project to help the Syrian government select a site for a potential nuclear power plant.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Translation: Israel did not get its way on this issue, and that is a good thing.

And please remember; Israel, which has nukes, refuses to allow IAEA inspection of their facilities.

Syria blames IAF for uranium traces

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem suggested Wednesday that Israeli bombs may be the source of uranium traces that diplomats at the UN nuclear agency said were found at a suspected nuclear site.

Moallem said the leaks by the diplomats about the traces found at the site that was reportedly targeted by Israeli warplanes in September 2007 were politically motivated and aimed at pressuring Syria.

US Aggression on Syrian Territory

In a dangerous precedent that provides clear and explicit evidence of its eagerness to exploit the rights offered under the Security Agreement which is now under discussion, the American occupation has attacked one of Iraq's neighbors and violated sovereign Syrian airspace and land to conduct a military operation. Helicopters were used to ferry in troops to secure a civilian area, in the process of killing some civilians and wounding others in a contemptible attack that has yet to be explained.

Syria FM: US may face 'painful' measures over raid

Syria's foreign minister says his country may resort to more "painful" measures if the United States doesn't give an official explanation for a deadly cross-border raid.

Syria retaliated to the Oct. 26 U.S. raid that it says killed eight people by ordering the closure of an American school and cultural center in Damascus.

But Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem says those measures were "introductory." He warns Syria could escalate its response in the future. He did not elaborate.

Tens of thousands of Syrians turned out Thursday for a massive government-orchestrated protest against a deadly U.S. raid near the Iraqi border.

Analysts Question Timing of Syria Raid

A cross-border raid into Syria by U.S. forces in Iraq and subsequent stonewalling by U.S. officials unwilling to divulge details have led to rampant speculation among U.S. analysts about the origins and meaning of the attack.

"So the question is: Why?" wrote geo-strategic analyst and journalist Helena Cobban on her blog, wondering if the raid could have been pulled off without explicit permission from the highest levels of the President George W. Bush administration.

Syria’s fury is justified — Who can blame Damascus for getting cosy with Moscow?

The US has once again “targeted foreign fighters” as part of its so-called war on terror. But these “fighters” were all Syrian civilians, including four youngsters. Another five individuals have been hospitalized after being shot by US Special Forces.

Washington has admitted perpetrating this tragic incident but insists the victims were terrorists just as it does when its fighter jets illegally cross the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and end up wiping out entire families. Syria describes the adult victims as construction workers.

Why Syria? Why now?

"Why now at the end of the Bush administration, with Washington trying to play nice with Damascus and tensions easing throughout the region, would US forces stage such a gambit?" echoed Borzou Daragahi on the Babylon and Beyond blog at the Los Angeles Times website.

Webmaster's Commentary:

With the closing of the US embassy in Damascus, I think that the obvious conclusion is that Bush will attack Syria as a gift to Israel before leaving office.

U.S. Damascus embassy may close mission following deadly raid

The U.S. embassy in Syria said on Wednesday that it may close to the public for fearing retaliation following a Sunday deadly raid on Syrian border by U.S. troops in Iraq.

The U.S. embassy made the warning in a statement on its Website, calling on Americans in Syria to remain alert to review their personal security.

Unforeseen events may cause the U.S. embassy in Damascus to close to the public indefinitely following the Sunday raid on eastern Syria blamed by Damascus on Washington, said the statement.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Closing an embassy is usually what happens before a heavy-duty military confrontation is planned to take place.

And note the us of the word "indefinitely" in terms of the length of this embassy closure.

One Last Bush Doctrine

Belittled domestically, President Bush is flexing his last working muscle: His control over the nation's military. US Faces International Condemnation in Wake of Syria Strike

Unnamed US officials said the attack had targeted and killed a “smuggler of foreign fighters into Iraq” and said they didn’t kill any of the women and children found at the attacked site. US officials say the attack is justified under an “expansive definition of self-defense” similar to the argument made by Israel when it attacked a site in Syria last year.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, if the US raid inside Syria DIDN'T kill those women and children, would someone kindly tell me precisely how they died?!?

And to describe this action in any way, shape or form as having been justified under ".....an 'expansive definition of self-defense'" just boggles the mind.

This was not "self-defense"; it was sheer, naked aggression; there's no other logical way to describe it.

(And isn't it remarkable how every single person killed by American forces in the global War on Terror is somehow "linked to al-Qaeda"? Even the children. AMERICAN STRIKE ON SYRIA: A GIFT FROM CHENEY TO MCCAIN?

We are closer than ever before to serious conversations between Israel and Syria, Syria has recognized an international border with Lebanon for the first time in modern history, and this is horrifying to neoconservatives who ran Washington for the last decade. They need to use force and force only to conquer Iraq, Iran and Syria. And they need to promote a conception of the American presidency that is focused on the use of military force. It is vital to their conception of American hegemony.

Report: Bush offers swift Golan withdrawal

US President George W. Bush suggested to Syrian President Bashar Assad that Israel would withdraw from the Golan Heights in exchange for a complete disbandment of the Syrian-Iranian alliance, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida reported Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

(Ahem).

Memo to the White House and US State Department; the last time I checked, it is Israel which is currently in control of the Golan Heights.

The US has absolutely no control here.

And one has to wonder; did Bush and his minions happen to mention anything to the folks at the top of the Israeli political food-chain, who are this very moment scrambling for supremacy in either the coalition Livni is struggling to achieve, or in the general elections which will happen if the coalition is not achieved by the deadline?

My guess would be that this absolutely hasn't happened.

Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad is many things, but he is no idiot. In fact, he appears to be a smart human being.

He and the Syrian government will recognise this for precisely what it is; a promise the US can't keep, because it's not the US's promise to make, should such a deal be struck. It is Israel which must make this promise for such a deal to even be considered.

Syrian Tripwire For WWIII

The Russians are making clear their intentions of using the large Russian naval presence in Tartus as a deterrent to Israeli air strikes against Syria using the powerful anti-air missiles on-board the Russian naval warships. Syrian commandos invade seven N. Lebanese villages outside Tripoli

It is the largest Syrian force to invade Lebanon since Damascus was forced to end its occupation of the country in May 2005, three months after former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri was assassinated.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Syria took the blame for Hariri's assassination, and it was the political fallout from that murder that forced Syria to leave Lebanon. Of course, this is what cleared the way for Israel to send two soldiers over the border into Lebanon, call their subsequent capture a kidnapping, and then invade Lebanon, possibly to seize the Litani river as a water supply.

Now that motive is more clearly seen, Syria appears to have decided that they are not going to continue taking the blame for Harari's assassination, and will return to status quo ante.

This will forestall any further plans by Israel to invade Lebanon.

Bush and the Neocons have royally screwed this nation. Their slavish backing of Israel aggressions against other Mideast nations has opened up an opportunity for Russia to move into the region and greatly expand her sphere of influence.
