Air pollution worse than smoking mother: study

Exhaust fumes and ground-level (tropospheric) ozone increase the risk for premature birth, according to a study by a team of researchers at Umeå University in northern Sweden.

The study, carried out in Stockholm - a city with comparatively low exhaust emissions - showed that ozone and fumes affect the foetus more than if the mother were a smoker.

Previous studies carried out in more polluted global cities has previously shown that the risk for premature birth is heightened. The Umeå study now reveals that even ground-level ozone poses a danger to pregnancy, according to a report in the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) daily.

'Too cold' for trains in northern Sweden

The plunging mercury has put a stop to rail services to the far north of Sweden on Sunday with rail operator SJ explaining that it was just too cold to guarantee safety.

"It is due to the cold. The trains can be left stationary on the line," said Anders Edgren at SJ's press office.

Services between Luleå and Narvik in Norway suffered disruption on Saturday and SJ has announced that night train services from Gothenburg and Stockholm to Kiruna and Luleå have been cancelled on Sunday.

"The trains can be left standing and evacuations would take too long. It gets cold fast and we can't guarantee travellers' safety," Edgren explained.

Democracy, Utopia or Opiate?

The U.S. is touted as having a great democracy. Everything good–either real or imagined—is supposedly due to their principles of democracy. Seldom do American politicians or members of the public define or clarify what those principles include.

America’s founding fathers, who were familiar with the democracies of the classical Greeks, distrusted democracy.

How can it be a democracy when shadowy figures control events?

Two-front international struggle for Palestine

Lawrence Davidson argues that Israel is intent on ethnically cleansing its own Arab citizens and that, to prevent this, it is imperative to intensify the international boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against the Zionist state and, equally, to redouble popular pressure in the United States that forces a change in foreign policy toward Israel.

Russia and China Veto Syria Resolution

Shortly before 1PM EST, Reuters headlined, “Russia, China veto UN resolution telling Assad to quit,” saying:

The diplomatic “setback” came the day after “Syrian opposition (elements) accused Assad’s forces of killing hundreds of people (in) Homs, the bloodiest night in the 11 months of upheaval in the pivotal Arab country.”

Like other pro-Western media, Reuters pointed fingers the wrong way. Throughout the conflict, Assad was blamed for Western-backed externally generated violence. In fact, he’s more victim than villain, but don’t expect media scoundrels to explain.

Security Council Showdown on Syria

Slowly things are coming to a head. America, Israel, rogue NATO partners, and regional despot allies are itching for a fight with Syria. Russia and China stand firmly opposed.

Britain’s UN mission said the “UN Security Council is set to meet 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Plan is to vote on Syria resolution.”

Reuters said “(o)ther missions confirmed the announcement.”

Nevada! Clark County Vote Fraud

Caucuses are a hotbed for corruption. Votes can be changed, tossed, or miscounted at almost any time in some caucus settings. Transparency has been eliminated in the process as some counties wisp their results away to a secret location to tally the vote totals.

Over 900 ‘dead people’ cast their votes in South Carolina and Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn recently stepped down amidst vote controversy.

News coverage surrounding the Paul campaign has highlighted his failure to place first in 4 early contests, but online forums and organizations have been labeling voter fraud a potential culprit.

Robert Fisk: An attack on Tehran would be madness. So don't rule it out

If Israel really attacks Iran this year, it – and the Americans – will be more dotty than their enemies think. True, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a crackpot, but then so is Avigdor Lieberman, who is apparently the Israeli Foreign Minister. Maybe the two want to do each other a favour. But why on earth would the Israelis want to bomb Iran and thus bring down on their heads the fury of both the Lebanese Hezbollah and Hamas at the very same moment? Along with Syria, no doubt. Not to mention sucking the West – Europe and the US – into the same shooting match.

Democracy, Utopia or Opiate?

America’s founding fathers, who were familiar with the democracies of the classical Greeks, distrusted democracy.

John Adams, second president of the U.S. wrote “Democracy… while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.”

In his book What’s Wrong with Democracy, Loren J. Samons professor of classical studies provides ample justification for America’s founding fathers’ distrust of democracy, a form of government they scorned precisely because of their familiarity with classical Athens.

Howdy neighbor: Iran warns neighbors against assisting US

A senior Iranian military official says Tehran will attack any country used by "enemies" to launch a military strike against his country. The statement comes amid growing tensions between Iran and the West.

"Any spot used by the enemy for hostile operations against Iran will be subjected to retaliatory aggression by our armed forces," the deputy head of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, said Sunday according to Iran's Fars news agency.

The official did not name any particular country suspected of acting as a launching pad for military action against Iran, and the six Gulf Arab states considered to be US allies have said they would not allow their territories to be used for attacks on Iran.

Can Ron Paul Be Tamed?

No – but his campaign can

by Justin Raimondo

If Ron Paul isn’t exactly Jesus, many of his supporters treat him as if he is indeed the incarnation of Liberty in human flesh: the media routinely describes them as “fanatical” – or, more charitably, “devoted” – and I don’t blame them for their enthusiasm (indeed, I share it). Paul is undoubtedly a messianic figure, although he is the last one to give himself that kind of aura, and that’s because we are indeed living in a time of woe, from whence a great many people are seeking deliverance. Ron is their one hope, a bright spot in an ever-darkening and increasingly scary world – and our elites don’t like that one bit.
