Air pollution worse than smoking mother: study

Exhaust fumes and ground-level (tropospheric) ozone increase the risk for premature birth, according to a study by a team of researchers at Umeå University in northern Sweden.

The study, carried out in Stockholm - a city with comparatively low exhaust emissions - showed that ozone and fumes affect the foetus more than if the mother were a smoker.

Previous studies carried out in more polluted global cities has previously shown that the risk for premature birth is heightened. The Umeå study now reveals that even ground-level ozone poses a danger to pregnancy, according to a report in the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) daily.

'Too cold' for trains in northern Sweden

The plunging mercury has put a stop to rail services to the far north of Sweden on Sunday with rail operator SJ explaining that it was just too cold to guarantee safety.

"It is due to the cold. The trains can be left stationary on the line," said Anders Edgren at SJ's press office.

Services between Luleå and Narvik in Norway suffered disruption on Saturday and SJ has announced that night train services from Gothenburg and Stockholm to Kiruna and Luleå have been cancelled on Sunday.

"The trains can be left standing and evacuations would take too long. It gets cold fast and we can't guarantee travellers' safety," Edgren explained.

Democracy, Utopia or Opiate?

The U.S. is touted as having a great democracy. Everything good–either real or imagined—is supposedly due to their principles of democracy. Seldom do American politicians or members of the public define or clarify what those principles include.

How can it be a democracy when shadowy figures control events?

Russia and China Veto Syria Resolution

Shortly before 1PM EST, Reuters headlined, “Russia, China veto UN resolution telling Assad to quit,” saying:

The diplomatic “setback” came the day after “Syrian opposition (elements) accused Assad’s forces of killing hundreds of people (in) Homs, the bloodiest night in the 11 months of upheaval in the pivotal Arab country.”

Like other pro-Western media, Reuters pointed fingers the wrong way. Throughout the conflict, Assad was blamed for Western-backed externally generated violence. In fact, he’s more victim than villain, but don’t expect media scoundrels to explain.

Reuters doing its part to make Iran the villain Managing perception - the real job of the media

Reuters: Iran says will hit any country used to strike its soil

"Any spot used by the enemy for hostile operations against Iran will be subjected to retaliatory aggression by our armed forces"

Fair enough, as wars go. Reuters begins by saying that Iran will strike back at any source of enemy fire, which would of course include US bases in ME countries. It's obvious the US doesn't have bases there for no reason. It has been planning a confrontration with Iran for a long, long time.

But read the final paragraphs of the Reuters article, where the perception is shifted to that of Iran striking US bases and the US having to fire back in "self defence".

That's what is called creative writing. Always end with the mental picture you want to instill.

Super Bowl Sunday and the Material, Kabala Girl.

These days, many Egyptians call the place Misr, which I think is short for Misery, which misery has come their way via the same highway most everyone else's misery comes from these days. But, of course, even with the incredible weight of evidence that proves this beyond any and all doubt, I must be wrong to believe my lying eyes.

Tennessee, the Volunteer State, has begun to push back against the tyranny that is the indefinite detention provisions contained in the National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2012, better known simply as the NDAA.

The state bills currently being considered could be one of the most significant steps taken against the atrocious assault on our most essential liberties embodied by the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA.

Monsanto's got a place in government (video)

Michael Taylor is part of a revolving door at the FDA, where Monsanto Execs just come and go as they please. First, Michael R. Taylor was an assistant to the FDA commissioner. Then he left to work for a law firm in the 1980's to help gain FDA approval of Monsanto's artificial growth hormone (rGBH), which is directly linked to cancer. Then he became deputy commissioner of the FDA in 1991, and was later re-appointed to the FDA in 2009 by Obama. He is the food villain who tried his best to keep this "malignant milk of the turn of the century" from being labeled.

Michael Taylor is the epitome of everything Monsanto represents. Taylor is like a vehicle for Monsanto's patenting of seeds and global domination of farming. He implements the government's "favorable" agricultural biotech policies because it's much more of a financially sure shot to use RoundUp in food than to farm organically and ethically. If the investments aren't paying enough at the corporation, Execs just switch over to Federal Regulations and write some new Legislation based on "tainted research", which allows them to pile more toxins on the American public and bankroll off it when they flip back to the corporate side.

Academic conferences don't usually muster public attention, but in 2009 the organizers of the blandly titled Israel/Palestine: Mapping Models of Statehood and Paths to Peace found themselves at the center of a media shit storm fuelled by the hysterical rhetoric of pro-Israel community groups and their supporters in the media. This reaction culminated in an unprecedented move by Conservative Minister of State Gary Goodyear to threaten the funding of Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) -- an arms-length agency created by an act of parliament -- if it did not commit itself to a review of the funding it had already awarded by an independent peer-review process.

Understanding the Ron Paul phenomenon

(*By Wayne Allyn Root) Ron Paul is a phenomenon many establishment politicians cannot understand. But as a leading Libertarian-conservative media personality, as well as the 2008 Libertarian Vice Presidential nominee, I completely understand this phenomenon, and I hope to solve the mystery here today at FoxNews.com.
* * *
Let me start with his #1 attribute. Ron Paul is RELENTLESS.
* * *
Secondly, while Ron Paul is not your traditional politician, and is painted by the media as extreme, the voters are starting to realize that it is the traditional status quo politicians that led us right into this economic Armageddon.
* * *
Lastly, we come to the true energy of the Ron Paul Revolution – the youth vote.

Cardinal Health Inc. said Friday that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has suspended its license to sell drugs from a Florida distribution center, and the company plans to fight the action.

Cardinal Health has faced similar charges before.

In 2008, Cardinal Health paid $34 million to settle claims that it failed to report suspicious sales of controlled substances. The company reached the settlement with seven U.S. Attorney's Offices and the Drug Enforcement Agency for and paid the civil penalty for allegedly violating its obligations under the Controlled Substances Act.

In that case, federal regulators said despite earlier warnings, Cardinal failed to report to the DEA suspicious orders of the painkiller hydrocodone, best known under the brand name Vicodin. It then distributed the drug to pharmacies that filled illegitimate prescriptions from rogue Internet pharmacies.

Once booming, Nevada’s economy has tanked since last time presidential race visited

Now, Nevadans are struggling with the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates in the nation, their woes creating a dour landscape as Republican candidates compete for votes ahead of Saturday’s GOP caucuses.

Infrastructure Problems In U.S. Go Far Beyond Dollars

The problems America faces with its infrastructure are often much less headline-grabbing than the 2007 collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minnesota, which focused national attention on the subject in a way that has set the tone of discussion ever since. They are more often on the order of lost productivity and lost opportunity. They include other problems Obama referenced in his speech, like "a power grid that wastes too much energy; an incomplete high-speed broadband network."

Webmaster's Commentary:

When all the money goes to wars and bailing out the bankers, who should be cooling their heels in jail for the shaky and criminal mortgage default swaps, there is no money left with which to fix these problems.

Google, Twitter Cave to International Censorship Pressure

Eric Blair
Activist Post

Google and Twitter have been under great pressure to censor content on their platforms from several countries. Twitter has been blamed for stoking revolutionary and protest uprisings around the world, assuredly sparking concerns in all leaders who seek to hold onto power. Meanwhile, Google has already succumbed to censorship demands in China, as well as individual YouTube removal requests from various nations.

Most recently, in America, Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Senator Joe Lieberman, sent a letter to Google requesting that they censor violent content on their Blogger platform. Lieberman also made a similar request to Twitter, that they deactivate accounts that tweet anti-West content...

How the Boston Herald Defamed a prison activist using sex.

Boston Herald struggles to defend against Defamation case after losing on Summary Judgment. They are going to trial folks after lying and saying a woman had sex with an inmate and snuck into prison with State Rep Gloria Fox. The women were there to report on abuses within the prison, and the Herald is all buddy-buddy with the prison folks so they had to try to put her down. Thing is, the victim/survivor is like a magna cum laude college grad and her father is an attorney. I met her on a talk show I was co-hosting a couple years ago and helped her present her case to her attorneys, who took it on pro bono/contingency.

The Iraq war coverup: What did AIPAC do and when did it do it?

As I pointed out yesterday, the Center for American Progress (CAP), a Democratic-Party-linked thinktank in D.C., has met quietly with officials of the Israel lobby group AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) and explicitly sought to squelch suggestions by its own journalists that AIPAC is pushing war on Iran.

Notably it squelched a CAP blogger, Eli Clifton, who wrote in August at the thinktank's site that AIPAC's summons to Congress for sanctions on Iran "brings to mind eery parallels" to its campaign for Iraq sanctions that paved the way for that stupid war. Clifton's piece concluded:

It would appear that AIPAC is now using the same escalating measures against Iran that were used before the invasion of Iraq.
