Radio Host Has Drug Company Ties

An influential psychiatrist who was the host of the popular NPR program “The Infinite Mind” earned at least $1.3 million from 2000 to 2007 giving marketing lectures for drugmakers, income not mentioned on the program.

The psychiatrist and radio host, Dr. Frederick K. Goodwin, is the latest in a series of doctors and researchers whose ties to drugmakers have been uncovered by Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa. Dr. Goodwin, a former director of the National Institute of Mental Health, is the first news media figure to be investigated.

US officials flunk test of Amerian history, economics, civics

US elected officials scored abysmally on a test measuring their civic knowledge, with an average grade of just 44 percent, the group that organized the exam said Thursday.

Ordinary citizens did not fare much better, scoring just 49 percent correct on the 33 exam questions compiled by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI).

"It is disturbing enough that the general public failed ISI's civic literacy test, but when you consider the even more dismal scores of elected officials, you have to be concerned," said Josiah Bunting, chairman of the National Civic Literacy Board at ISI.

Secrets of the Federal Reserve

On the night of November 22, 1910, a group of newspaper reporters stood disconsolately in the railway station at Hoboken, New Jersey. They had just watched a delegation of the nation's leading financiers leave the station on a secret mission. It would be years before they discovered what that mission was, and even then they would not understand that the history of the United States underwent a drastic change after that night in Hoboken.

THE PEACE THAT WAS BORN IN SIN

The Israeli peace camp was born in sin and died because of a lie: It was born as the legitimate son of the sin of occupation, and died the illegitimate son of the lie that `there is no partner` with whom to negotiate on the other side. Between September 1967 and October 2000, it spent 33 years waging the brave and determined struggle of a minority against a majority, `traitors` against `patriots,` `defilers of Israel` against `lovers of Israel,` David against Goliath. Today, we must painfully admit that it was struggle that did not produce much.

Esther Pollard: Now is the Time

Jonathan Pollard, the United States agent sent to jail for giving Israel information critical to the country's security, is entering his 24th year in prison on Friday. His wife Esther says now is the time to ask for clemency.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Johnathan Pollard was a traitor to his country, with a lot of the critical info he obtained for Israel winding up in the hands of the old Soviet Union.

Mrs. Pollard should be grateful that he was not executed by the US as a traitor.

Bush's pardon of Pollard (should it happen, and I am very sure it will be one of the topics of conversation when Olmert meets with him), would be a despicable insult to all the people serving in government security agencies who know which country they serve when they get up to go to work in the morning.

Prospect of Israel war on Iran ’stronger’

Israeli sources told the Times on Friday that in the past few weeks Tel Aviv has witnessed an increase in the chances of launching an airborne attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The bluster and bombast here is all over the place.

Israel knows that the window is limited for a strike against Iran before Obama becomes the president, as Obama is no where near as carnage-prone as Bush has been in the name of neutralizing Israel's perceived enemies (and that includes almost all of its neighbors in the Middle East).

Olmert, in his meetings with Bush, is going to appeal for/demand that Bush agree to a strike against Iran, using Iraqi airspace to make it happen.

And Bush just might do it, but not because he sincerely believes that Iran is really a threat.

Putting the US at war against Iran right before the inauguration will thrust Obama into a truly nightmare scenario he won't be able to back out of easily or gracefully.

Such a move would be insane, childish, and morally reprehensible in the extreme. Of course, that's never stopped Bush or his minions before.

Medvedev's Venezuela, Cuba trips set to rile U.S.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visits to Venezuela and Cuba during a week-long trip to Latin America look set to irk Washington, highlighting a foreign policy challenge facing President-elect Barack Obama.

His trip to Venezuela, a key buyer of Russian arms, coincides with the two countries' first joint naval exercise in the Caribbean -- traditionally viewed by the United States as its backyard.

During his stay in Cuba, the Russian leader is likely to demonstrate Moscow's commitment to renew a Cold War-era alliance with Havana, abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Well, let us be honest, it is the continuing cold-war US embargo of Cuba and belligerence towards Venezuela which has opened this door for Russia to step in.

Had the US used the opportunity of the collapse of the USSR to establish normal relations with Cuba, it would be Russia left out in the cold here. The same with South America; if the US had worked with Hugo Chavez instead of constantly trying to overthrow him, Russia would not have a toe hold in this hemisphere.

The problem with the US Government is that they have not gotten the message yet that the old cold-war methods DO NOT WORK ANY MORE!

US will guarantee up to $1.4T in bank debt

Federal regulators will guarantee as much as $1.4 trillion in U.S. banks' debt in a bid to get the distressed financial system pumping again. They also took steps to make it easier for private investors to buy failed banks seized by the government.

Directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. voted to approve the bank-debt guarantee program, which is part of the government's financial rescue package. The FDIC program is meant to break the crippling logjam in bank-to-bank lending by guaranteeing the new debt in the event of payment default by the borrowing bank.

Webmaster's Commentary:

With the US national debt running somewhere at a staggering ten trillion dollars and counting, just where is all this money really supposed to come from?

Taxpayers, literally taxed to death, and many of whom have lost their homes and their jobs in the economic collapse we have been witnessing?

Or is the Fed simply going to print up more (worthless) currency to make this happen?

This looks like a reverse-twist "Robin Hood" ploy to me; make the rich more rich, and soak it out of the hide of the taxpayer.

But Washington had better understand one thing: We the People have had it with the new "taxation without representation". How can I say that, when we have what pass for "elections" every two or four years??

Because those elected to office are there only to better the positions of the huge corporations which have "purchased" them as acquisitions. We the People are SOL when it comes to having our needs represented.

Olmert eyes new commitments on Iran during US visit

Olmert wants to clinch new commitments on Iran from his staunch ally before Barack Obama enters the White House, officials said.

Obama's policy toward Iran has raised concerns in Israel because it appears to take into consideration calls from the foreign policy and intelligence establishments for dialogue with the Islamic Republic.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What part of "lame ducks" do these men not understand?

One wonders just what kind of "commitments" on Iran Olmert is angling for in these meetings. Perhaps he's asking for/demanding US-led strike on Iran, or tacit approval for an attack against Iran, using Iraqi airspace?

People have done the war-gaming, and the reports are pretty well conclusive on this one: Israel is certainly capable of starting an attack against Iran, but would have great difficulty finishing it on their own.

And of course, there's that issue where Bush has pledged to defend Israel with US military might, even if Israel starts the conflict.

But there's one big, fat, hairy impediment to this attack on Iran which this article doesn't mention (the impediment which NO ONE in Tel Aviv or Washington wants to talk about). And that's Russia.

What will Russia do when its neighbor and 7th largest trading partner, Iran, gets attacked by the US and Israel?

Mahdi Army warns of new insurgency in Iraq if US troops stay until 2011

Supporters of Hojatoleslam Moqtada al-Sadr, the anti-American cleric, burnt an effigy of George Bush in Baghdad yesterday and gave warning of a return to armed resistance if parliament approves a deal that will allow US forces to remain in Iraq for three more years.

“No, no to the agreement of humiliation,” the followers chanted at a demonstration against the pact in a square in Baghdad where US Marines toppled a statue of Saddam Hussein after the March 2003 invasion.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Those still chanting "the surge is working...the surge is working..." had better pay close attention to these developments.

If the Iraqi Parliament turns down the STATUS OF FORCE AGREEMENT, which the US is attempting, desperately, to get them to pass, then the US has not one reason to be in Iraq past the 31st of December of this year.

And with Iraqi public anger so intensely against this, there is a very probability that it will not pass.

There is one thing we have to remember about Al-Sadr: he generally does what he says he is going to do.

A new armed resistance could have Iraq spiraling back into civil war and ethnic cleansing.

UNRWA chief: Gaza on brink of humanitarian catastrophe

Karen AbuZayd, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), said the human toll of this month's sealing of Gaza's goods crossings was the gravest since the early days of a Palestinian uprising eight years ago.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to UNRWA Commissioner-General Abuzayd: what you are seeing on the ground in Gaza is precisely the outcome Israel wants to have happen.

Gazan Palestinians are, Commissioner-General, literally being "softened up" by malnutrition for "the kill'; and by that, I mean that they are being starved so they cannot resist a massive Israeli invasion which will leave no Palestinian standing, if Israel thinks they can get away with it.

Make no mistake: this siege, and the outcomes Israel is creating by it, are clear, and completely unambiguous.
